As Covid-19 daily gives us further and stark evidence of the devastating systemic inequalities in our society in which black and brown lives are so much more expendable than white lives, I urge you to watch this short clip shared with me yesterday by my sister Joan Sullivan, educator in Los Angeles. It features writer and educator Bettina Love at a panel discussion at the Schomburg Center in Harlem in which she brilliantly, passionately explains the difference between being an ally and being a co-conspirator. By now we white people are well aware that we possess this thing called “white privilege.” Here Love gives us a clear, powerful example of how we can consciously and effectively decide to use it in order to make our world a better place.
“The learning process is something you can incite, literally, incite, like a riot.”
-Audre Lorde
